What are you paying for

When looking for a driving instructor it is tempting just to phone round for the cheapest price, or just go for the most advertised driving school.

Make sure you ask the right questions so you can fully make an informed decision.

The most expensive driving schools are not necessarily the best. A national company has many offices with staff and a huge advertising budget. Who is paying for all of this??
YOU of course
There instructors are no more qualified than any other instructor on the road.

What about the cheapest??
First thing is to ask 'how long are your lessons??'
Some driving instructors do 45 min lessons, so what sounds like a good deal can actually be lots more expensive in the long run.
motoskooL recommends lessons be at least 1 hour. The DSA recommends you learn the most efficiently with 2 2 hour lessons a week. We understand for many people this may be too big a financial commitment.

It is more important to pick an instructor you feel comfy with, you are going to be in the car with them for many hours.
At motoskooL we recommend that you take a lesson with an instructor before you commit to block booking of many hours. If for any reason you do not get on with the instructor then find another one. All people are different and what was great for your best friend may just not work for you.

Driving in ice and snow

Couple of you tubes from the DSA

In icy conditions it can take 10 times longer to stop.
Drive slowly, plan ahead, gentle acceleration and breaking and if the news is saying dont travel unless you have to then DONT TRAVEL UNLESS YOU HAVE TO
If you HAVE to remember pack warm clothing and something to clear the snow.
Make sure and clear ALL your windows of ice, have a full tank of petrol and give yourself plenty of extra time for the journey.

The 'sorry button'

I was taking a pupil through the 'show me, tell me' questions the other day and I asked if she knew another way to put the indicators on to check they were working.
She told me 'you could use the sorry button'
'The sorry button?' says I
'Oh yes, I was out with my friend on the motorway the other day, I was watching her drive and I noticed she pressed that button lots, I asked her what it was and she told me it was for when you had done something dum and wanted to say sorry to the other drivers.

She was pressing it a LOT!'

Tips on choosing your instructor

• Use a local instructor, this should save you money. They don’t have high advertising costs which reflect on lesson prices. (Guess who’s paying for the adverts with the national driving schools “YOU”)

• Your instructor should be on time, patient and friendly.

• You should be encouraged to pass your theory A.S.A.P.

• You should if you can have 2 x 1 hour lessons per week which will help reduce the time in learning to drive.

• Always ask the length of time of the lesson (not all instructors offer 1 hour)

• Most of all you should enjoy your lesson.
